Contra Costa County Martinez Detention Facility
The Martinez Detention Facility is the first and perhaps the most famous direct supervision county detention facility in the country. KMD Justice was responsible for all areas of architecture and design for this 383-bed maximum security facility located in downtown Martinez. The 181,240 SF building contains nine 48-bed housing clusters, each with its own large, outdoor courtyard. Courtrooms are included with provisions for expansion. The County made a commitment to the community that the jail would be adjacent to existing courts and county offices yet respond to the scale of the surrounding neighborhood. The four-story design was a significant departure from the traditional, monumental, downtown high-rise.
