1.2M SF | 1,500 Beds | Housing & Treatment Facility | Evidence Based/Therapeutic Design
COALINGA, CALIFORNIA, USA KMD designed the State of California's new $302 million, 1.2 million square foot, standalone housing and treatment facility for sexually violent predators. The facility program was extremely complex and led to the design of what we refer to as a 'village' composition. This project represented a new paradigm in the design of a public mental health facility (the largest of its kind in the United States). The 1,500-bed secure treatment facility represents 'best practices' for a treatment environment and incorporated the concepts of evidence-based and humanistic design as a platform for the project's development and execution.
